Soraya was born and raised in New York City and is from Persian-, French, and Italian descent. She speaks English, Farsi, French,
Italian and Spanish fluently, making her a true multi-cultural
artist. Drawn to acting from the age of 14 after winning a National Shakespeare competition, she continued her studies at British American
Dramatic Academy with Sir Ben Kingsley, David Leveaux, Fiona Shaw and Derek Jacobi. Soraya apprenticed at the Williamstown Theatre Festival where she worked with Tony award-winning Director Darko Tresnjak and also studied improvisation with Richard Kind and stand up with Lewis Black.
In a few short years, actress Soraya Broukhim's trademark ability to
effortlessly embody and transform herself into an array of personas
has earned her an impressive list of roles globally across the
stage, film and television. Her ability to fluidly incarnate characters, and to powerfully and poetically tell their stories, make her one of the fastest rising talents in the entertainment world. She is known in particular for her passion, openness, humor and her uncanny ability to bring symbolic, game-changing, historical women to life.
Broukhim’s most recently acclaimed role was as a French activist and
philosopher Simone Weil in the award-winning film "An Encounter with Simone Weil." The film was the winner of Michael Moore's Special
Founders Prize at the Traverse City Film Festival. Michael Moore
called it, "Heartbreaking and inspiring." It went on to play at over
18 international film festivals (including London, New York City, Austin, Dublin, Vancouver and San Francisco) and was also a New York Magazine Critic's Pick.
Also among Soraya's most notable roles to date is a solo play "Blackbird" by Lucia Cox, the story of a woman who has been trapped in a basement for 16 years. In the performance, Soraya played five different characters (including a Southern Creole figure). "Soraya Broukhim, the sole performer in Lucia Cox's strange and haunting play, maintains an intense sense of privacy while simultaneously engaging with her audience. She skillfully lets us know it's okay to watch... Ms. Broukhim swings between a crazed child who knows 'how important she is' to her captor and a self-aware, mature young woman who can't quite fit all the pieces together. Blackbird will stay with you." -Breanne Foister, New York Theatre Review.
In addition to Soraya's extensive global theatrical background, she
has earned a reputation as a chameleon across the various film and
television roles she plays. She recently appeared in the CBS series "Madam Secretary"alongside John Finn. She also played the lead role in "America 1979," an award-winning short film about an Iranian-American family during the Iranian American crisis in the 70’s. It was an official selection of the Screen Actors Guild Short Film Showcase, The Noor Iranian Film Festival, The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, The New Filmmakers New York and The International Peace & Film Festival, among others.
Soraya is an Artistic Associate at The Living Theatre, where she has
been mentored by Judith Malina since 2010. She has also appeared in
several off-Broadway and regional plays. She has taught as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University as well as a Teaching Artist at City College Theatre Department, Rush Philantropic Arts Foundation, The William Esper Studio, Pardis for Children, and Whitby School, to name a few.
